Everything You Need to Know Before Completing IRATA Level 1

IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) is the world’s leading rope access certification scheme. It provides a safe system for working at height using ropes and specialist equipment. IRATA technicians are employed across a range of industries including:

Mining, Offshore oil and gas, Wind energy, Industrial inspection, Construction and Maintenance services.

No, IRATA Level 1 is designed for people with no previous rope access experience. The course teaches the foundational skills required to work safely on ropes. Many candidates come from backgrounds such as:

Trades, Construction, Defence, Rigging, Scaffolding, NDT, Mechanical Maintenance

The course is physically demanding. You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but you should be comfortable undertaking moderate physical activity over several days. Throughout the week you’ll spend significant time:

Ascending ropes, descending ropes, performing transfers, conducting rescue exercises and working at height.

Each day builds towards your final assessment. During the course, you’ll learn:

• Equipment inspection
• Rope ascending and descending
• Changeovers
• Deviations
• Re-anchors
• Rope-to-rope transfers
• Rigging
• Rescue techniques

Your final assessment is conducted by an independent IRATA assessor. You’ll be assessed on:

• Practical rope access techniques
• Rescue procedures
• Safety awareness
• Theory knowledge

The purpose isn’t to catch people out. The assessment is designed to confirm competency and safe work practices.

• Lunch (BBQ provided on Friday’s Assessment Day)
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn

All rope access equipment is provided.
